Kids Peacock Halloween Costume

Blog Peacock

With Halloween coming up, I thought I would share the DIY Halloween costumes I made for my kids last year.  These were really fun costumes to make.  I’m really big on, first, making costumes that aren’t your typical polyester, just out of the package, everyone has costumes.  Second, I also try my hardest to keep prices down as much as possible.  Sometimes, though, materials can add up.

The main part of a peacock costume is of course the peacock feathers.  I ordered those in bulk from www.save-on-crafts.com.  Those were a little pricey, but that’s because I sprang for the better quality feathers.

I hot glued the feathers in a layered arrangement onto a piece of cardboard.  And then I held the whole feather piece up to my kids to see where to place the arm straps.  For the arm straps, I used a basic piece of elastic, cut holes in the cardboard, and thread it through and tied it for a comfortable fit.  After I got the feather piece to be the right fit, I glued a piece of dark green felt to the back of the cardboard to make the back a little more esthetically appealing from the back.

For the tutu, I simply tied strips of lime green and blue tule to an elastic waste band and hot glued some peacock sword feathers for a little more effect.

For the mask, I bought a simple plastic mask and glued bright blue sequence and black feathers around the eyes.  I added a few peacock swords to the top for some more affect.  Then I made the beak by folding a triangle piece of yellow construction paper and glued it to the bridge of the nose.

Here is the part where I cheated a little…  For the bodice, I bought a woman’s tight sequence dress and cut it in half.  The dress was a One Size Fits All type dress, but was made super small.  It actually fit pretty good on the kids.  I bought it at a store called Pink Zone.  I started pricing out sequence material, but this was a lot cheaper and a lot easier to use an already made dress because I didn’t have to sew it.  And then I just put the bodice right on top of a long sleeve shirt since the weather was a little cooler that day.

Overall, the feather piece and the tutu took me a little time, but the costumes were fairly easy to make.  And they got so much attention!  Complete strangers were asking to take their pictures.  The girls felt super special in their home made peacock costumes.
